Microsoft/Google/IBM and other News & Rumors

* January 12, 2009 (Computerworld) Oracle Corp. made “major” cuts in its global workforce on Friday and more are expected to come, say multiple sources and news reports.

Sales staff and consultants working for Oracle in North America were hit hard, say sources, as well as employees who had joined Oracle recently through its acquisitions of Hyperion Solutions Corp. and BEA Systems Inc.

The number of people let go on Friday is unclear. Tim Klasell, an analyst with Thomas Weisel Partners, told Computerworld he thought the layoffs were likely to be in the hundreds or low thousands, rather than the 8,000-figure buzzing about on some blogs and message boards.

Mike: Microsoft layoff rumors have quieted over the past few days as the company concentrates it’s energies on Windows 7 release. I’m still running XP, but I certainly hope 7 is a better product than Vista:

* Microsoft issued an apology Saturday for the delays in downloading the Windows 7 beta, and said it would make available an unlimited number of beta downloads and keys for the next two weeks.

“I know many of you had issues with the Windows 7 beta site of the last 24 hours,” Brandon LeBlanc, a Windows communications manager, wrote in a blog post. “As you may have noticed the download site has been up and running smoothly since this morning. That said, we apologize for the inconvenience that it caused some of you.”

* Reports that Microsoft could be laying off thousands of employees this month continue to swirl around the tech world, as the company nears its January 22 earnings call.

Will they? Well, Microsoft is in the same downturn as everyone else. That said, the company has a history of not cutting workers during the downtimes.

The company’s other divisions, including home and networks and enterprise devices, will not be affected by the layoffs, according to the report. The company also plans on pulling out of the CTIA trade show in April and on trimming the number of devices it brings to market down to about a dozen per year. The only smartphones the company will release will be based on Google’s Android platform.

via Rumor Mill: Massive layoffs may be coming for Motorola – FierceWireless.

* In the final week of December, Motorola disclosed with the SEC that it will cut an additional 400 jobs on top 1,500 already announced, but our friends over at PhoneScoop are reporting that Motorola (NYSE: MOT) is gearing up to make much more significant job cuts, which may include up to 50 percent of the entire handset division. In addition, Motorola is not planning on having a booth at CTIA Wireless in April, and that going forward it will only deliver about a dozen handsets a year. The only smartphones that it will produce will use Google’s Android operating system. A spokeswoman declined to comment, saying the company doesn’t comment on rumors.
