Mike: Good day to all and thanks for visiting The Layoff List. Today brings a bevy of economic reports, so let’s see how the experts analyze the data. MBA Purchase Applications fell from the previous week even though interest rates are at historically low levels. The remainder of the reports are as follows: Retail Sales, Import and Export Prices,  Business Inventories .
Unfortunately, today was a difficult day for job loss announcements and economic reports. The only bright spot was that businesses reduced their inventories, which may encourage hiring once new products need to be made. All the job loss announcements left me little time for commentary, which is something I enjoy doing, but getting out the news is more important.

Tomorrow brings us the ever important Jobless Claims  report, which is expected to be 609,000.  Last week I pulled a guess of 602,000 out of my hat and missed by 1000. This coming week is tougher to call, since last week had some busy days and some slow days, so I’ll go with 615,000.
The job cuts announcements are starting to be heard from the auto parts suppliers and school boards this day. The demise of the auto manufacturers is crushing a number of suppliers quickly and with school budgets having to be made balanced before the next school year, school boards have to make draconian job cuts in many locations. This is bad news on an already fragile job market, but it should have been expected. These cuts won’t be part of tomorrow’s weekly jobless claims, but they should show up in the following week. Sorry to relay such lousy news, but that’s what’s being reported. The sooner we hit bottom, the sooner we can begin an honest bounce

Since I believe that most of us, whether employed or unemployed, should be aware of how many people are losing their jobs, I’m going to start a weekly jobless claims number contest. I’ll ask you to send me your guess as to the weekly claims number and the closest to the mark gets a $20 online gift certificate to a retailer to be determined.  While it’s a dark challenge that may seem inappropriate to some, it’s meant more to be an exercise in current events.  Ties will be determined by random drawing. If you have any thoughts about the contest, send them to me atmike@layofflist.org.  Till Thursday…………………..

Mike: I posted the below story to illustrate the difficult job market. Last week there were many pundits announcing that the lower jobless claims number was a good sign that job-loss was bottoming. While the total number of people losing their jobs week to week may be leveling, it’s not an indication that firms are hiring readily. Businesses will be cautious to hire until they are certain that the overall economy is improving. It’s a Catch-22, somewhat, since people need jobs to spend money, but businesses won’t hire until people spend more money. Maybe the fed’s largess can break that logjam, but it won’t happen overnight.

May 12 (Bloomberg) — Job openings in the U.S. fell to a record low in March, signaling the jobless rate is likely to keep climbing even as firings abate.

Openings, or the number of jobs available as a percent of total employment, fell to 2 percent from 2.2 percent in February, the Labor Department said today in Washington. The percentage of jobs available was the lowest since record-keeping began more than eight years ago.

The separations rate, which includes dismissals and those who quit their jobs, held at 3.6 percent, the same as the prior month. While recent reports show that companies aren’t announcing as many firings as they had earlier in the year, they are still slow to start hiring because demand remains weak.

General Economic News

Mike: From the first story below, according to the author, you can at least take solace that the record amount of foreclosures was ONLY 1% higher in April than the previous month’s record. I visited RealtyTrac  to get the scoop on their thoughts and a more realistic picture. Do some comparisons and see which source gives you a more accurate pictureI prefer the RealtyTrac account.

– More than 342,000 households received at least one foreclosure-related notice in April, RealtyTrac Inc. said. That means one in every 374 U.S. housing units received a foreclosure filing last month, the highest monthly rate since the Irvine, Calif.-based foreclosure listing firm began its report in January 2005.

April was the second straight month with more than 300,000 households receiving a foreclosure filing, as the number of borrowers with mortgage troubles failed to abate.

The April number, however, was less than one percent above that posted in March, when more than 340,000 properties were affected. The March data was up 17 percent from February and 46 percent from a year earlier.

The report also shows that one in every 194 U.S. households received a foreclosure filing during the quarter.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Sales at U.S. retailers fell for a second straight month in April, pulled down by sluggish gasoline and electronic goods purchases, government data showed on Wednesday.

The Commerce Department said total retail sales slipped 0.4 percent after falling by a revised 1.3 percent in March, previously reported as a 1.2 percent drop.

May 13 (Bloomberg) — Prices of goods imported into the U.S. increased in April for the second straight month, as oil costs rose.

The import-price index increased 1.6 percent, more than three times as much as forecast, after a revised 0.2 percent gain in March, the Labor Department said today in Washington. Excluding oil, prices fell 0.4 percent.

WASHINGTON (AP) — U.S. businesses slashed their inventories for a seventh consecutive month in March, the longest stretch in seven years, as companies struggled to cope with a prolonged recession.

The day started with some larger international announcements and then it continued all day with some substantial job loss announcements from US companies. Tomorrow brings us the ever important Jobless Claims  report, which is expected to be 609,000.  Last week I pulled a guess of 602,000 out of my hat and missed by 1000. If you have any thoughts about the contest, send them to me at mike@layofflist.org.  Till Thursday…………………..
