Due to receiving more than 200 letters thus far from those who submitted letters to the House Ways and Means Subcommittee on Income Security and Family Support , I need to create multiple posts.

The House Ways and Means Subcommittee on Income Security and Family Support is held a hearing on June 10 titled: Hearing on Responding to Long-Term Unemployment. I asked readers of Rochester Unemployment Examiner to send me letters they wrote to the Committee that they also wanted to have published here.* Below are some of those letters. I’ll be posting other letters as I receive permission.

There is still time to write; you can submit letters to House Ways and Means Subcommittee on Income Security and Family Support is holding a hearing until the close of business on June 24.

I want to thank all of you for including me in your letters to the Hearing. I will do my best to reply to each and everyone of you in a timely fashion.

Re: Hearing on Responding to Long-Term Unemployment

To ALL members of the U.S. Congress & the President of the United States of America

I am a 57 year old male who has worked for over 43 years.

I have always paid my Income Taxes, and paid into the Social Security System, as outlined by our government.

Like so many MILLIONS of other Americans, through no fault of my own, I was laid-off from my most recent employer of over 16 years, on October 6th, 2008. I was the Quality Manager of a manufacturing company that went from a 24/7 operation to one 8 hour shift.

I am a divorced father with custody of my 14 year old daughter. (Due to what will be stated in this letter, I MAY be forced to give custody to my ex-spouse…that, I should NOT be forced to do…my daughter deserves better from HER country)

I am not someone who has looked to my government to “pay my way”, and have never approved of what many Americans referred to as the “American Welfare System”.

Again, like millions of other hard-working, dedicated Americans who lost their jobs through no fault of our own, I have found that companies do not want to hire a 57 year old, divorced, white male, who hasn’t worked for over 1 & ½ years. The daily frustrations that I have experienced cannot be put into words. One has to “live it” by being in this position and by reading comments from the “still-employed” Americans, who think that anyone who hasn’t found new employment after this length of time, must be lazy, unmotivated, worthless, looking for the old Welfare scams, and only wanting to be on full-time vacation. If they only knew how far from the truth this is for MOST, if not ALL of us. I have sent resumes, had interviews, made phone calls, have visited companies that aren’t advertising any current openings just to have an application on file “in case” something becomes available…I can’t even keep track anymore of the hundreds (thousands?) of these over the last year & ½.

I have received Extended Benefits through the “Unemployment” system, Tiers I, II, & III, but the State of Kansas did not have a Tier IV, as some other states put into place. I have exhausted all benefits made available to me, and am still unemployed as of this writing.

I was one of the “lucky” Americans, who after working many years, was able to live the so-called “American Dream”, of owning my own home, along with owning 2 vehicles.

Due to the state of the economy, and the decision by Congress to no longer “HELP” Americans such as myself, I was forced to file bankruptcy. I lost my “dream”..our 4-bedroom home..our new car..health insurance (as well as health, in general), dignity, respect, good credit rating, and many, many other things.

Not only did we have to move from our house (our HOME) to an apartment, I now can no longer afford to pay the rent, buy food, pay for gasoline for my “used” 2002 VW, or pay utilities (which includes phone & computer, and they are my last resorts for further seeking of employment). All of this because Congress has decided that I am not entitled to receive any further assistance from my country.

This is while I continue to read of the BILLIONS of dollars my country is giving to foreign countries to assist them through the “disasters” they have encountered… or “bailing out” the Banking & Auto industries with BILLIONS because “we can’t afford to let them fail”…

What about us???… the Americans who have encountered this “disaster” in our lives…do you honestly feel it’s OK to let US “fail”, and that we don’t need the help of OUR OWN COUNTRY?

H.R.4213 does NOT address the “Long-Term” unemployed, those of us without further available “Tiers”. It only addresses giving the “shorter-term” unemployed an additional amount of time to file for an extension of their benefits. Even this hasn’t PASSED Congress – YET.

While you’re on vacation, or approving your own pay raises, some of us are on the brink of becoming completely homeless…What did WE do wrong??? … and “vacation”? What is that?  I can’t even imagine that “luxury” anymore.

Do we NO LONGER EXIST to the people we elected to Congress to help lead our country. If what I have read is correct, and I believe it is, those of us who have exhausted ALL benefits, are no longer “on the books”, so we aren’t included in the figures/Unemployment % reported to/by the Press. We should be included, not FORGOTTEN!!! What is the TRUE percentage if you INCLUDE us? We ARE unemployed…Why play with the numbers to make the economy look like it’s improving, when in fact, it is NOT for some/most  Americans…Tell the American public the TRUE NUMBERS…we DO exist, even if Congress wants to ignore us, or at a minimum, not want to deal with us.

As we all know, the oil damage in the Gulf of Mexico currently has the main focus of the Press, but please give the “damage” to the American people YOUR main focus…we deserve to NOT be forgotten.

There are internet blogs that I have read that are quite disturbing, and show the true desperation of some Americans. Some have said they are going to commit crimes just to have a “roof over their head” and to have their children become “Wards of the State” so that they will receive care & housing that the parent can no longer supply…Others have stated they are ready to commit suicide so that their children will receive life insurance and/or “survivor benefits” rather than see them forced to “live on the streets”…  How much of this do we need to see actually start happening before this desperation is realized?

PLEASE help us…we NEED your help…we DESERVE your help…we were NOT the cause of the current state of our economy, or the loss of OUR AMERICAN DREAM….

“Jobs Programs” will be a great benefit to the entire country, when & if they work, but that will take quite a lengthy time to re-employ all who have lost employment.

Of course employment several months (or longer) from now is better than “not at all”, but…PLEASE include a TIER V to the Extended Benefits program and add it NOW, and to ALL states…not after 3 months of additional debate, and to only a select group of states, using incomplete data of the TRUE Unemployment %…we can NOT survive that long without help from our country…

I could write for days on this subject, but I know it would most likely be placed to the side without review, so I will end here and state…

… I believe in MY country and hope that my country believes in those of us who needs “her” help….

“… OF THE PEOPLE, BY THE PEOPLE, AND FOR THE PEOPLE…”

Respectfully & Sincerely

RE:  Hearing on Responding to Long-Term Unemployment

Dear Senator McDermott,

I am writing this letter in response to ANOTHER 4 hour day at the Unemployment Office in South Carolina.  Suicide is becoming more and more attractive each day I survive.

I recently turned 53 and up until three years ago I felt my life fairly blessed.  I started working @ 12 as a babysitter and officially was on the Social Security books in 1973.

In November of 2006 my beloved Mother was diagnosed with Stage 4 Lung Cancer & given 6 months to live.  In January of 2007 I lost my job as a Licensed Customhouse Broker, (my original license was issued in 1986 by the then U.S. Treasury Dept., now “Homeland Security), a career I had for over 20+ years.  In April 2007 my husband of 13 years abandoned me.  I’ve lost my home, car, even my pets.  I have NOTHING.  I have little to no family as I was unable to have children and my family is extremely small.  In fact I only really have a Aunt in Maine, (who is also suffering due to the economy) and a sister in Charleston with two children ALSO not able to help me.  If not for the blessing of a friend I would be on the streets!  Literally!  I’m sure you are not aware, (it’s another one of American’s dirty little secrets), but there is NO WHERE for a WOMAN to go, (shelter), unless they are physically abused or have children.  I do not fall under either of the two “qualifications”.  There ARE men shelters.  Can “someone” explain this to me?  Never mind, that’s another issue and not the purpose of this letter.

This being said my last date of “employment” was June 8th, 2009.  I held a couple of jobs working for “call centers”, (I would describe these positions very close to being operated the same way as “sweatshops”), but other than that I can’t get a job ANYWHERE.  I have moved four times in the past year, (in South Carolina and Florida), living with friends.  No home.  No Job.  No Security.  No family.  No feeling of worth.

Unfortunately having had a somewhat unorthodox career I “pigeon-holed” myself where my skills are somewhat limited albeit I’m pretty sure I could flip a burger.  Did you know that when you apply on-line, (which 98% of places I have applied to require), that McDonald’s does not even offer an application or a place to “paste” a resume.  Instead you answer a 50+ “assessment” questionnaire.  I’ve done so many with so many companies but I think a question such as “Do you think smoking is harmful for your health?” is not only mundane but asinine as well.

So, here we are.  10 million, 20 million, 30 million?  Really, does anyone really know how many of AMERICANS are unemployed?  How many have just given up?  How many HAVE committed suicide?

My experience with the South Carolina Employment Commission, (or whatever they are calling themselves now since the discovery of how inept the offices are), has been overwhelming.  I went from February of this year until May without receiving a single dime.  I myself initiated my four month quest by going into the Charleston, SC office, (where I had lived for 20+ years), to ask WHY I had not been called in for an “eligibility” review.  Out of 16 weeks I was either in the Charleston or Greenville “One Stop” office 14 times!  By the way, The Greenville News, recently had a headline story that aside from the “Commission” being “run amok” the reporter also quoted that of the 1100 S.C. agency employees, 300 of them had returned to work after retirement.  These retirees returned to jobs that were NEVER posted for us regular folk.

In closing I am “grateful” my Mother did not live to see what has happened to my life.  I am “grateful” she will never have to know I had to pawn her jewelry in order to “survive”.  Most of all I am “grateful” she never had to see what America has become.  I grew up in Leesburg, VA..  I know what goes on “inside” the beltway.  I watch CSPAN and see NOTHING going on.

I am pleased to see you are on “our” side.  Of course you are only one Senator and of course you have never experienced, (nor will any of your children, grandchildren or great-grandchildren), experience what “normal” AMERICANS are losing or have lost.  This is NOT my America.  Greed and Politics have won.  No wonder the comparison’s to the fall of the Roman Empire.  We’re there!

WE NEEDA TIER V!

Thank you for your time and consideration in reading this letter.  I pray “someone” on your staff will point out MY letter and help me to regain a life and perhaps just a little bit of dignity.

Sincerely,

From N.M. in FL:

URGENT—-URGENT  — URGENT —-URGENT——-URGENT

WE NEED UNEMPLOYMENT AND COBRA 65% DISCOUNT TO BE EXTENDED UNTIL THE END OF 2010

THE HEALTH CARE BILL DOES NOT KICK IN FOR 4 YEARS,

IF PREXISTING CONITIONS WERE NOT BLOCKED FOR THE NEXT 4 YEARS  AND PRICING WAS FAIR AND UNEMPLOYMENT WAS EXTENDED OUT UNTIL THE UNEMPLOYMENT RATE  WAS DOWN, I MIGHT BE ABLE TO GET AFFORDABLE INSURANCE- BUT DUE TO THE WAY THE HEALTH CARE BILL IS- I CANNOT AND NEITHER CAN OTHERS.

WHAT GOOD IS THAT?

WE NEED EXTENDED UNEMPLOYMENT TO A LONG TIER V.AND 65% COBRA EXTENDED IMMEDIATELY.

IT IS URGENT THAT YOU EXTEND COBRA 65% BENEFITS OUT FOR THE UNEMPLOYED. IT IS ALSO URGENT THAT YOU IMMEDIALTLY EXTEND UNEMPLOYMENT BENEFITS FOR ALL AMERICANS WHO HAVE OR WILL BE ENDING TIER 4.

TIER 5 FOR ALL IS A MUST AND VERY QUICKLY FOR BOTH.

PLEASE READ MY STORY

I AM 63 YEARS OLD, MY 3 WEEKS OF EB EXPIRED JUNE 5, 2010

(I DID NOT GET THE 20 WEEKS IN FLORIDA, I ONLY GOT 3 WEEKS BECAUSE OF THE JUNE 5TH END DATE AND TIER 3 CAME IN SO I NEVER STARTED MY 20 WEEKS OF EB UNTIL TIER 4 RAN OUT.)

AND  MY COBRA 65% DISCOUNT EXPIRED MAY 31ST 2010, UNLESS IT IS EXTENDED TO SAVE US I DO NOT KNOW WHAT TO DO…

WE TOOK OUR SOCIAL SECURITY EARLY ONLY SO WE COULD PAY OUR BILLS AND NOT DEPEND ON MEDICAID HOUSING ASSISTANCE ETC.WE THEREFORE LOST A LOT OF OUR FUTURE IN BENEFITS.

WE WERE PAYING $578.00 PER MONTH FOR THE TWO OF US.

I JUST RECEIVED MY CONVERSION PLAN FOR MYSELF AND IT IS $1288.00 PER MONTH FOR 1 PERSON. MY HUSBAND IS ALSO UNEMPLOYED BUT HE GOES ONTO MEDICARE JUNE 1, 2010 AND MUST BUY A SUPPLEMENT TOO.

I CAN’T EVER PAY THIS $1288.00

THE ONLY OTHER WAY OUT IS TO DIVORCE MY HUSBAND AND GET ON MEDICAID.HOW SAD, HE IS THE LOVE OF MY LIFE.

I AM AN INSULIN DEPENDENT DIABETIC AND NO ONE ELSE WILL COVER ME. THE INSULIN IS OVER $200.00 A BOTTLE PER MONTH

I USE 2 BOTTLES OF 70/30 AND 1 BOTTLE OF REGULAR- SO THAT IS OVER $600.00 A MONTH PLUS MY OTHER MEDICATIONS SUCH AS ADVAIR @ OVER $200.00 A MONTH AND AVAPRO 300 AT ABOUT $100.00 A MONTH.

I HAVE PRICED THIS ALL WITH A DISCOUNT CARD AND IT COMES TO OVER $600.00 A MONTH. THERE ARE OTHER MEDS, BUT THEY ARE GENERIC BUT MY LIFE SAVING INSULIN, BLOOD PRESSURE AND ASTHMA DRUGS I CANNOT AFFORD.

IF UNEMPLOYMENT WERE EXTENDED OUT UNTIL WE CAN FIND WORK IN FLORIDA, A STATE WITH OVER 12% UNEMPLOYED WE AND OVER 1 MILLION OTHERS IN FLORIDA WOULD BE SAVED FROM DESTITUTION.

I AM NOT ALONE IN THIS PLIGHT, MILLIONS WILL BE BEGGING IN THE STREETS, STEALING AND DYING JUST FOR MEDS & FOOD &HOUSING.

OVER GOVERNMENT MUST HAVE A HEART AND A CONSCIENCE!!!

IF ANY OF YOU TRIED TO LIVE ON 275.00 A WEEK +$25 FOR EVEN A MONTH YOU WOULD KNOW HOW HORRIBLE IT FEELS. WHY NOT TAKE AWAY EVERYTHING YOU HAVE AND TRY IT FOR A FEW MONTHS.

IT IS UNCONSCIONABLE THAT ANYONE FROM THE PRESIDENT TO CONGRESS AND THE SENATE COULD ALLOW THIS TO HAPPEN TO THE PROUD AMERICANS WHO GAVE YOU YOUR JOBS, BENEFITS, PENSIONS, HOUSES ETC.

WE ARE PROUD AMERICANS, BUT WE NEED HELP FROM THE PEOPLE WE VOTED TO PROTECT US!

THIS GREAT COUNTRY HAS BAILED OUT  EVERY OTHER COUNTRY, GIVEN MONEY TO  COUNTRIES IN NEED, BAILED OUT OUR BANKS, AUTOMAKERS AND BIG BUSINESS- YOU NEED TO HAVE A CONSCIENCE AND HELP THOSE OF US STILL UNEMPLOYED.

YES, IT APPEARS THAT THEM FIGURES OF THOSE COLLECTING UNEMPLOYMENT IS DOWN, BUT THE TRUE FIGURES ARE NOT THERE, BECAUSE IT IS DOWN BECAUSE THEY CAN NO LONGER COLLECT.

MY UNEMPLOYMENT ENDS IN 1 WEEK, WHEN I FILE FOR MY 1 WEEK, THEN I WILL BE APPLYING FOR FOOD STAMPS, MEDICAID, RENTAL ASSISTANCE AND ANYTHING ELSE I AM ELIGIBLE FOR- JUST TO SURVIVE. I AND MILLIONS OF OTHERS DID NOT PLAN FOR THS- EVERYONES SAVINGS ARE GONE,

OUR LANDLORD WAS NICE INTAKING PAYMENTS, BUT ONCE UNEMPLOYMENT IS GONE, THERE WILL BE NO WAY TO MAKE THOSE PAYMENTS UNTIL I CAN FIND A JOB WHERE I DON’T HAVE TO LIFT 50 LBS AND STAND ON MY FEET ALL DAY( I AM IN NO MEDICAL CONDITION TO DO THAT WITH HEART, DIABETIES, ASTHMA AND HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE—AND NOW I WILL NOT BE ABLE TO GO TO DOCTORS OR GET MEDICATION.

IS EVERYONE IN WASHINGTON BLIND TO WHAT IS HAPPENING??

WHY  IS IT THAT THERE IS FUNDING THAT DOES NOT HAVE TO BE REPAID FOR CONTINUING EDUCATION IF YOU WANT TO GO FOR A COLLEGE DEGREE. BUT IF YOU ARE IN YOUR 60’S AND WOULD LIKE TO CHANGE CAREERS BY TAKING A COURSE FOR YOUR HEALTH INSURANCE LISCENCE OR A REAL ESTATE LISCENCE, WHICH TAKES A MUCH SHORTER AMOUNT OF TIME TO GET AND LESS MONEY  HAS TO BE PAID FOR THESE LISCENSES, WE MUST PAY FOR THEM OUT OF POCKET?

BECAUSE  THE GOVERNMENT WILL NOT HELP US PAY FOR THIS AND WE CANNOT AFFORD TO PAY, THEREFORE ANOTHER AVENUE IS SHUT OFF FOR US.

IF THESE WERE INCLUDED IN THE GOVERNMENT STIMULUS WITH THE EXTENSION OF UNEMPLOYMENT AND 65% DISCOUNT OF COBRA, MANY OF US WOULD BE MAKING  MONEY NOW.

I WATCH THE NEWS AND EVERYDAY I SEE MORE ROBERIES, PEOPLE BEING SHOT AND KILLED FOR A FEW DOLLARS FOR FOOD ETC. IS THIS REALLY WHAT YOU WANT FOR OUR COUNTRY??  THE CRIME RATE IS UP AND IT WILL BE MUCH HIGHER AND DESPERATE PEOPLE DO DESPERATE THINGS.

WE DESPERATLY NEED THE 65% COBRA  EXTENDED NOW PAST 18 MONTHS- I END ON MAY 31,2010 AND THE HEALTHCARE BILL DOES NOTHING TO HELP ME UNTIL I AM ALMOST 68 YEARS OLD.I WILL NOT MAKE 68 IF THERE IS NO HELP

AND UNEMPLOYMENT EXTENDED UNTIL THE END OF THE YEAR SO WE CAN GET BACK ON OUR FEET-( I STILL BELIEVE IN THIS COUNTRY. WITHOUT UNEMPLOYMENT I CAN’T PAY FOR COBRA.

HELP US!

PLEASE

RESPECTFULLY,

From V.M. in MI:

My situation is by no means unique: I am divorced; 55 years old; have been unemployed since November 2007; can’t afford health insurance and am too young for Medicare; am on food stamps; have used up most of my IRA (for which I’m penalized for early withdrawal),

More than anything, I want gainful employment. I’ve applied for a variety of jobs–from entry-level to professional–and no luck. I’m an attorney and have a master’s degree in business. I’m also an actor, artist, photographer, and writer, and I’ve been doing some freelance jobs, but they are few and far between. I cannot find one meaningful paid job in any of those categories. The paid positions out there are part-time or temporary, have no benefits, and pay very little. Clearly, employers are taking advantage of this situation.

I would be happy working as a file clerk, but rarely do I get an interview and when I do, the interviewers are often half my age and don’t give serious consideration to my qualifications. I never hear back from them. Age discrimination is rampant.

When I hear politicians and others say that people like me are lazy and will be more motivated to find work if there were no more unemployment benefits, I wish that I could afford to move away to a country, such as Canada or New Zealand, that values its citizens and offers health care to everyone.

Why do our politicians not bat an eye when bailing out Wall Street and GM, and keep funding a war that has no end, but abandon those who desperately need an extension of unemployment benefits? We’re not asking for handouts—we’ve paid into the unemployment insurance

I, and millions of others like me, need your help.

Thank you.

Kind regards,

From G.H. in CA:

Senator McDermott and Members of Congress:

I have been unemployed for almost two years. I’ve sent out more resumes than I can count, since losing my job as an executive assistant at a law firm in 2008. I’ve had only two or three callbacks, and only one interview. It is bleak. I am almost out of unemployment. Time is growing short for me. For many people, it’s already happened. They’re defaulting on the debts, losing their cars, their homes, their dignity.

I have solid resume, a broad and experienced skill set, a college degree, and have been working since I was 14 years old. In fact, I held two jobs while also attending high school. I worked full time while earning my college degree. I can work. I will work. I like to work, and see the benefits of my labor. I think that most people do.

The government and industry is failing us. We need the lifeline of unemployment continued until the unemployment rate comes down, significantly. Everybody knows it. There are no jobs.

From M.C. in CT:

I and my wife have been unemployed, out of no fault of my own and have exhausted all our unemployment benefits as of last month or before.  I have lost so much in the last two years and now if you do not add ADDITIONAL WEEKS beyond continuing the programs I AND MY FAMILY WILL BE HOMELESS AND WITH OUT TRANSPORTATION AND CELLPHONES! There are no jobs out there no matter what News stories try to portray!

Look in any major local paper at the job classifieds (nationwide)-1/2 page or 1 page is the norm instead of 10-15 pages in the past! Hundreds attend the few openings!

So please support the American people like you have the Banks/Wall St. and so many big $$ bailouts and wars. As we all know things will get better, but jobs are nowhere to be found now! All you have to do is look at the market diving in the USA and worldwide when the latest JOBS NEWS CAME OUT THIS WEEK!

How can you ignore the AMERICAN PEOPLE who elected you?

It will take support from Congress for the remainder of 2010 and early next year!

Don’t let any Democrat or Republican state that you shouldn’t help because of the deficit or because unemployed people are lazy and milking the system.  I would love to see any of them try to live like so many Americans on unemployment or no funds coming in!

We the good people of America WANT TO WORK!  But we need the help of additional weeks now!

Help us out and expand tier 4 or add a tier 5 to do a long term extension.

THIS IS EMERGENCY SPENDING DIRECTED AT THE UNEMPLOYED ON MAIN ST!

Without additional unemployment benefit weeks added, every day/week/month the # will grow, its already huge but by Election time!~ LOOK OUT!  MILLIONS WITH NO SUPPORT AND HOMELESS.

We have used up all of our 401k,savings-lost our credit cards and credit and can barely feed ourselves.

I have had to go to food pantries and my kids are not eating well and you can see it in their physical look!

PLEASE HELP US I BEG YOU TO BE DECENT AND ACT IMMEDIATELY TO ADD A TIER 5 OR ADD TO TIER 4!

Thank you M, S/J /C and Emily

OUR FAMILY IN NEED!

  2. I have been unemployed for over one year. My tier 4 is exhausted.

How do I keep my home which I have lived in for over 25 years.

Congress think if your job was gone and you had no income or jobs lined up.

All unemployed Americans need Tier 4 extension or Tier 5 to exist.

We did not create this situation.

  3. Chris says:

To Layoff List.org – Regarding the letters to congress posted here: Most are too long with too much “pity party” personal stuff. I empathize and understand people are suffering as I’m one of them. Yet, these letters should be brief and too the point with a common thread “there are not enough jobs for the number of unemployed. Until the US and state unemployment numbers decrease and there is “real” job creation, congress needs to extend benefits immediately and add additional weeks to Tier 4 or create a Tier 5.” Period!

I’m 62 and unemployed. I live in California where jobs continue to disappear and Silicon Valley has lost its edge to China. I have worked 40 years have never been unemployed for extended periods until 2008. I’ve gone through my savings to keep afloat and pay my small mortgage. This is not change I can believe in!

yes some of these letters folks write are long but guess what this reality these people are hurting tey are losing their homes their life.we didnt cause this to happen the job losses the recession but bwe are the ones paying for it.congress dont care about what is happening to us.how can you tell me you care and then let us starve and lose our homes.i am just so tired of writing you folks in congress all this does is fall on a deaf ear

WHAT PART OF “WE DID NOT CREATE THIS PROBLEM FOR OURSELVES” DOESN’T CONGRESS UNDERSTAND?

  8. Chris says:

Too much media attention on the gulf spill. T. Boone Pickens, a former Texas oil tycoon with old money spoke twice on CNN Larry King. Pickens knows what’s going on. He says fix the spill and clean up, there will be plenty time after for “blame games.”

Right now, the long term unemployed in high UE states (CA, NV, RI, PA, MI) are suffering with zero help or attention from Washington or the media. Too many “pity party” unemployment blog forums stating the same thing . . . “nothing” but ripping politicians apart and sharing their sad tales.

10,000 unemployed folks need to march on Washington. That will be the only way to get their attention and make something happen.

Faxing, calling, emailing senators and reps is a waste of time.

  9. India says:

I applied for my 55th job today in the last two weeks. I am hearing nothing back from anyone. Today I even saw a ad that read, “We are looking to hire a female receptionist between the ages of 19 and 23.” What in the world! Are you kidding me! I am 53 and for years I have looked like I am 37 to 39, at least that is what people tell me. But I promise you that when they see my age my looks do not matter! My skills should! But who cares anymore. Not the employers that we 99ers are dealing with these days. We must have some HELP! We are becoming broken people with broken hearts!

  10. Angie says:

Ive been out of work as of 2006 this was my full time job when my company sold out we lost are jobs my daughter and I at that time we went on unemployment and had several part job with several agency but none lasted long , I lost my home to back taxes last year and have been trying to get a job but all application have to be apply on line I have apply and apply but no answer I’m 70 and still have to work I have so many Dr. bills behind on utilities and 1 month rent at my new place my unemployment ran out in march and it’s so hard to make ends meet on what little social security pay plus I have a car I’m paying for we need that tier 5 there is so people out of work. It’s seams that we sure help other country why not help our own people first?

  11. Elba says:

My reason for being unemployed in the City of New York is because Of the NYC Department of Education and their mobsters. I was employed as a teaching assistant and after reporting a teacher for corporal punishment on a then 10 year old special needs child I was fired. They even tried to keep me from collecting unemployment until I beat them at a hearing but now they are saying that for all of us who are awaiting extended benefits we have to just sit and wait until Congress approves another extension. In the meantime, what do I tell my Landlord? What do I tell my electric company? I just got help from charities with paying back rent and sadly will become homeless because Congress has forgotten about us. I can’t go to a local welfare agency because it appears that I am entitled so some additional benefits but they are apparently frozen until Congress approves this so no Social Service agency is going to give me a dime as long as they see that I have some money coming to me from unemployment. If the NYC Department of Education was not as corrupt as it is, I would still have my career and I am now almost 53 years old and worked so hard for my career and now, I have nothing. Please members of Congress approve this extension for us. Don’t just forget about us. We do exist and you do need our votes…Crimes will be committed because we do have to survive…

  12. Jan from Newbury says:

Having read the letters above, I am struck by the fact that almost all of these writers are over age 50.

My story is so similar. Both my husband and I were laid off, no fault of our own. We were trying to sell a house because we had moved for a job, so we’ve been making 2 house payments and can’t sell either house, even though both are on the market at a big financial loss to us. Our life savings is gone due to stock market conditions that were caused by the SEC, greedy corporations, and a Congress that kept their eyes closed to banking irregularities, even though there had been warnings presented to them.

Here is plain talk. Although the bankers caused this economic crisis, the Congress is writes the laws that banks must comply with. The buck stops with Congress. And now we good people who have worked hard our entire lives, served in the armed forces, paid taxes for decades, voted for you, are faced with financial devasatation YOU THE CONGRESS CAUSED, and some of you are arguing against extending unemployment and have concerns that extended COBRA is too expensive? Get real! WE THE PEOPLE ARE PAYING THE PRICE FOR THE BIGGEST SCREW-UP CONGRESS HAS EVER CAUSED!!! WE NEED UNEMPLOYMENT COMPENSATION EXTENDED NOW! WE NEED COBRA EXTENDED NOW! But most of all, WE DESPERATELY NEED JOBS!!!!!!!!!

WE WANT JOBS, NOT HANDOUTS. Get to work and fix what you broke, and start today or resign. If you are not working every minute of every day to solve this crisis, you don’t deserve to serve in Congress.

WE WANT JOBS, NOT HANDOUTS. IN THE MEANTIME, EXTEND UNEMPLOYMENT COMPENSATION AND COBRA.

  13. Joan Schede says:

Washington was quick to bail out wall street and banks, are HUMAN BEINGS less valuable to them. They asked us for our understanding and our money to bail out these greedy people. When will they help the millions of AMERICANS who need this money to try and keep a roof over our heads and put some food on the table.

Did these public officials forget they asked for our help to get elected and did they promise they would be there for us in our time of need. Well, what happened, did they forget their pledge.

American aid first before another CENT is given to any country for aid. Charity starts at home and there are millions of AMERICANS who need help to live to survive until there are jobs for everyone.

We have asked, begged, pleaded, written letters, faxed, phoned and emailed Washington but still our voices fall on deaf ears.

Since the American people pay their salaries, we are infact their boss, and I say its time to lay them off. If they can’t help us, they are no good to us and should resign or be laid off.
Maybe they could get a job at McDonalds to supplement their salary, oh but wait, there are no jobs available.

  14. Tina R capps says:

I don’t even no if this is America anymore.. What happen to us? We stand by and watch all these Bail Outs Banks Car Dealers ect ect….We worked all our lives. and we the people of america lose everything, and than they want to no why crime is up… Hello people,There is no helping the america people who worked there whole life,me also 60 years old, done everything i could to find work resume online in person application, had to claim bankruptcy had excellect credit now going,go for a job if you credit isn’t good they don’t hire you, again. I am 57 and have been unemployed for 1 yr.,3 mo. I am single, do not own a home, no health insurance or savings left. I have a car payment every month, which soon won’t matter because I will be losing my car in July. Why? Because my last unemployment check for $554 dollars is now spent on bills. I have $50 for food and that’s it. I have been applying for work consistently all this time and yet only one interview of which I was not chosen for the position. I keep trying but nothing. I have some chronic health issues and no health insurance, and like many of us in this situation just trying to have faith that a 5th tier will happen through jan 1st 2010 at least. Oh, did I mention that i will have to leave my home too, since the landlords will need rent this summer. I am at my wits end. A country who bails out everyone, but cares naught for it’s own citizens, except during smoozing periods at election time. A government who manages to come up with lots of money for the “liar loan” financial institutions, and is in cahoots with foreign countries that are corrupt and will readily assist them but CAN’T POSSIBLY COME UP WITH A 5TH TIER EXTENSION FOR IT’S LONG TERM UNEMPLOYED??? oh cause it might make us dependent?? oh please. Won’t we be more dependent when we’re on the streets?? Because that’s what’s happening in my life…….and obviously many others on this website. My heart goes out to all of you and let’s hope and pray that some big hearted, compassionate congressmen will make it happen? Could any of them even imagine in their worst nightmare what this is like for us? For those in california like myself unemployment is well up 15%! We need help!

  17. Wendy from Ohio says:

Hello, I would like to introduce myself to you but right now I feel nameless because I am just one of many of thousands of unemployed 99ers who feel that they are inconsequential and do not matter to you anymore. Of late, we can no longer contribute to stimulate our ever-decreasing economy by purchasing even basic needs. We have exhausted all of our savings and/or retirement accounts which we worked so long and hard for. Some of us may be lucky enough to get on a public assistance program BUT only after we have lost everything. However, even as a recipient of public assistance, we will not be able to afford to buy laundry detergent, dish soap, toilet paper, or any other non-food item, but maybe if we skip another month on the gas bill, toilet paper could become a luxury item and if another month on the electric bill is set aside, doing laundry would become a luxury as well. How about the mortgage and/or rent, which accounts for most of the unemployment compensation checks we used to receive each month. Personally speaking, I guess if I don’t pay my mortgage and my home is foreclosed on (which won’t be long now)because I have exhausted all of my savings, inheritance, 2-401k’s, I could go into public housing assistance and bleed the system of more money then it would have cost to give nameless a further extension of unemployment compensation benefits. Living in public housing could go on for the rest of my life. Yes, that sounds like an easy way out! Multiply that by tens of thousands of my nameless friends who will follow in my footsteps. Yes, we will lose all self-worth and become charges of the government and not care who gets elected to what office because we don’t matter anymore so why should we care about anything? Maybe more of us will resort to crime and have to serve time in prison. Hey, there is another way to put food in our stomachs, AND have a roof over our heads to boot! There again, that just may create jobs because the states will have to build more prisons to contain all of us. I know that sounds a little far-fetched but I’m only trying to get a point across. Did we ask for our jobs to be eliminated/terminated? What started this whole process anyway? Think about it! Our government thinks we are lazy and that we feel it’s just easier to sit at home and live off of a limited sum of “free” money every week. Let me tell you, that “free” money cost hundreds of thousands of people much anxiety and distress. Sit home? WHAT HOME? I am 60 years old and have spent more years than I care to admit in the legal arena. I have sent countless resumes out for any job that I would be qualified for and even some not, hoping against hope that SOMEONE would take notice of my qualifications, not my age, and give me a chance to become a productive member of society again. To date, that has not happened and I have been unemployed since the latter part of ’08. I did manage to secure a part-time, minimum wage job that is very physical for a woman of my age, but given the opportunity, I JUMPED at it because that was all I could get and I need to make ends meet; this part-time job PLUS my unemployment compensation kept me minimally afloat. Don’t get me wrong, I am very GRATEFUL for my minimum wage part-time job but now that my unemployment compensation has ceased, I will sink, not swim. Going back to the “lazy” thing, additionally I have begun a very small business venture to HOPEFULLY supplement my part-time, minimum wage job using the last of what is left of my savings. Am I considered “lazy?” I am working 7 days a week and am so tired of crying myself to sleep at night worrying about money that it is beginning to affect my physical health as well. That is a moot point, I HAVE NO HEALTH INSURANCE. Paying my health insurance premiums depleted my savings account! Where is this going to end? Yes, my letter is verbose because I have a lot to worry about and I am scared.

  18. Cheryl says:

I have been unemployed for about 9 months after a workforce reduction. I had savings, now exhausted, trying and keep my home purchased at the height of the market. HAMP program does not go for the unemployed, stipulation is 9 months must be available (THERE IS NEVER 9 MONTHS) I am now living on straight unemployment trying to keep my home from foreclosure. Without this extension passed it will surely happen and I too will be homeless along with the millions of others living in tents and shelters or in the homes of friends and family.

I hear many times from our government representatives, just get a job; 99 weeks is enough. First I have not collected 99 weeks, second, not passing the extension only compounds the current situation, with “known” unemployment rates in the double digits, your saying to people who have helped build this country, in essence given you responsibility as our voice, “a job”, we don’t care what happens to you, we got ours. Lastly, I would like to address those who say we are lazy and just looking for a handout. I would trade places with you in a heartbeat just to have a job. Why would ANYONE want this much stress on top of being unemployed. After over 25 years in the workforce, why would I choose lazy, waiting to be homeless, losing everything I have spent years saving for?

  19. Tuan says:

    Dear U.S. Government,

I’ve spent a total of 7 years in college to get my teaching credential and had worked as a teacher for 8 years. My school district had laid off over 2,000 teachers last year and I was one of the victims since I did not have seniority over others in the district. I have never been unemployed in my life and find it impossible to find a job nowadays. I’ve applied at dozens of school districts, temp agencies, grocery stores, Targets, Walmarts, and anything the I can think of and yet, I don’t even get a call back for an interview. I’m very frustrated that no one is hiring me and I don’t know if it is because I am not qualified or overqualified for the job or maybe there are too many people applying for the same position. The unemployment checks are my last lifeline for survival and I hope you extend it because without it, I really don’t know where to turn because I live on my own. I lost my job through no fault of my own and cannot find another one.

  21. Pamela Dickens says:

    Dear Senator Grihalva,

My situation is by no means unique. I am 56 years old; have been unemployed since March 2008; can’t afford health insurance and am too young for Medicare. I have paid my mortgage on time, but am getting precariously close to not being to pay it. Credit cards are also being paid on time.

More than anything, I want gainful employment. I’ve applied for a variety of jobs from entry-level to professional, and no luck.

I’m also a public relations professional, artist, photographer, and writer, and I’ve been doing some freelance jobs, but they are few and far between. I cannot find one full-time paid job in any of those categories. The paid positions out there are part-time or temporary, have no benefits, and pay very little. Clearly, employers are taking advantage of this situation.

Rarely do I get an interview and when I do, the interviewers are often half my age and don’t give serious consideration to my qualifications. I never hear back from them. Age discrimination is rampant.

When I hear politicians and others say that people like me are lazy and will be more motivated to find work if there were no more unemployment benefits, I wish that I could afford to move away to a country such as Canada or New Zealand that values its citizens and offers health care to everyone.

Why do our politicians not bat an eye when bailing out Wall Street and GM, and keep funding a war that has no end, but abandon those who desperately need an extension of unemployment benefits? We’re not asking for handouts. We’ve paid into the unemployment insurance

I, and millions of others like me, need your help.

    Respectfully,

    Pamela Dickens

  25. Sunny Johns says:

To Whom It May Concern: I am writing this letter, as many have, to as that unemployment benefits be extended long-term. I am a 57-year-old female who has worked most of my adult life. I have been laid off from my last job since November 2008. I exhausted all my tiers, but my recent tier was Tier 4, which I was told that when it reached a $0.00 balance, I could apply for State Extended Benefits. I applied for my State Extended Benefits in the timeframe indicated, and even received a letter from the Department of Labor that I was eligible. They also enclosed my Monetary Determination letter and told me that I was eligible for 20 more weeks of unemployed. After not receiving my benefits checks for the weeks of 6/5, 6/12 (and I most recently filed for the week of 6/19), I went to the Department of Labor today only to be told that the last SEB checks were mailed out on 6/5/2010 and no more would be mailed. You can imagine my shock. I am a homeowner, and my unemployment benefits were my main source of income. I just cannot fathom a country that is always running to the aid of other countries, allowing their own people to suffer, people who elected individuals to different political offices, people that we thought were going to fight for our interests. I have friends who have lost their homes, have no food to feed their chidlren, no utilities, and the hardships just go on and on because the United States has opted to say we aren’t important? It was one thing when I saw all the homeless people on the street when I was working, but does this recent decision mean that I am going to be added to the group, after all I have contributed being a productive citizen? I cannot believe that Congress is going to allow millions of Americans go to out like this. If so, it is definitely cruel and unusual punishment. All of you on Capitol Hill, try living of the menial amount of money we are getting for unemployment, money, I should say, that a lot of us should be getting more of because we have been productive citizens all our lives, have not abused the system, have not lived on welfare, have not received food stamps, Medicaid, etcetera. I hope that this decision will be rethought, because it is only going to increase the crime rates, negatively affect the GNP, and whatever else trickle down effects this may have. Many children will be homeless and hungry. Is that the way of America? I hope not. Please extend our unemployment benefits until the end of the year. I will graduate from a Medical Assisting program in two months, and hopefully I will be able to get a job. I switched to the medical field after being in the legal field for more than 30 years and was subjected to the shaky way they did business which caused unstable unemployment. It’s not like I am sitting around waiting for a handout; I want to get back to work so I can pay my bills.

    Thank you.

It is hard on me because now with the little I make I have to try to make all the bills and it is hard with what I make. The Irs is holding my refund which would help alot and not the other part of the government is holding money from my household. What is a person to do to survive these days. If the Senate go three weeks without pay and see how they will meet their bills, buy food, pay for medical attention, car repairs and other needs I wonder if they would like it. I had to go pawn my car title just to go to the doctor and get my medication for my arthist. It is so hard I don’t know what to do next.WE NEED THAT TIER PAST SOON

I am a 60 year old women who lost her job of 18 years in 4/2008. This was not just a job to me, it was my second home. My boss at the time thought that this would be very temporary. But, as it was a Mortgage Company I worked for, things did not get better for him, they got worse. I had never in my life filed for unemployment benefits before, and it was very hard for me to have to do that. I have worked full time for 40 years with NO BREAKS IN EMPLOYMENT! I never had children so I ALWAYS WORKED! I also never had any trouble finding a job before even though my education ended with High School. So having been basically IGNORED by all employers out there because of my age and lack of college education (which is bull, because even people with extensive college educations in my position are not able to find work)Well you can understand how degrading this is! THERE IS UNBELIEVABLE DISCRIMINATION going on right now by employers. Some even have the nerve to say “Currently Unemployed Need Not Apply”. And why is this going on?!?!? Because NO ONE IS REGULATING THEM! They are hiring people to do the work of three or four and paying them as little as possible with NO HOPE OF RAISES! Why are they doing this? BECAUSE THEY CAN! Because our Government is letting them. Because our Government does not know HOW TO FIX THE JOBS MARKET! And every day they lie about how the economy is getting better by the day! I have just one question for the IDIOTS in Congress who say we are lazy!!! WHAT ABOUT AMERICA’S CHILDREN! WHAT ABOUT THE CHILDREN! WHAT ABOUT THE CHILDREN! WHO WAS THE IDIOT IN CONGRESS THAT SAID THEY CANNOT DO ANOTHER EXTENSION BECAUSE OF THE DEFICIT, AND HOW IT WILL AFFECT OUR CHILDREN AND OUR CHILDREN’S CHILDREN? It won’t affect them at all if they die of starvation!!!! If they don’t extend unemployment benefits TO ALL STATES now, then they will be the ones responsible for what happens when the CHAOS STARTS. And it will start if we do not get the help we need soon! First we march peacefully, if that goes unnoticed by our Government, well GOD HELP US ALL! Enough said. This country is broken, and our elected officials BROKE IT!

I lost my job through no fault of my own; unemployment agreed and approved me to receive benefits. While it is true I have been receiving unemployment for a very long time, it is also true that good jobs are hard to find. Furthermore, if you are not honest on job applications, you can run into trouble. And the fact that I lost my job through no fault of my own further hinders my ability to obtain employment. I am barely surviving and living through the generosity of friends and family, moving from place to place. Now that my benefits have ceased (although I had 10 approved weeks left, the deadline has cut me off), I have one foot in the street, literally. There are many people out there in my position, and we desperately need these extensions for sheer survival. I urge the government to approve extensions as soon as humanly possible or there will be an influx of people on the streets with nowhere to go, no way to provide for themselves, let alone their families. Please hear us and approve these extensions.

“honorable committee members” Please…. I don’t know any honest people in government.

You guys are being way to nice. I feel for all of you. I’ve been through the depressed mental state you people seem like you are going through..

I won’t beg.. I’m done being depressed. My anger builds by the day. I hate our government and I don’t see anything changing in my lifetime. I’m done expecting anything from this government and this government needs to understand I’m done with them. If I am lucky enough to get another job the government won’t be getting another dime in taxes from me. I’ll take my chances and when they finally do catch up with me I’ll say what I have to say and do what I have to.. then I’m outta here!!

I was let go in January 2010 and once my 26 weeks of state funded unemployment end (2 more weeks from now…) I am done. No federal extensions… Nothing… I don’t understand why everyone thinks the unemployed are given 99 weeks of extensions… I too will soon be out on the street and most likely loose my family, and my life… I just think it is twisted for the government to keep referring to tier 1, 2, 3, 4, and hopefully 5 and long term unemployment when the fact is shot term or long term we are all screwed. 🙁

  35. Linda says:

My husband has been laid off since October of 2008. We are more fortunate than most because I work. However, we have lost our home – I couldn’t afford the mortgage and the upkeep in order to keep our house on my salary. We now live in an apartment that I think we can afford but I can’t get caught up with our other bills.
That is not even why I am writing – I don’t know if anyone in Congress understands how those that are unemployed are broken human beings. My husband is in construction. I have watched my husband, my best friend lose his job, his dignity, and his feeling of self-worth. That hurts more than any financial problems we are having. Many times I cry at night but I do so at a time and place that he cant hear or see me because I don’t want him to feel worse than he already does.
It was never our plan to live off our government. To hell with the automobile and banking industry. They think that they are too big to fail – so are American workers. Where is our bailout? Oh yeah, going to China for “Green Jobs”.
Hey President Barak Hussein Obama – you can keep your “hope and change”! It is not working for me. This is not the Country that my father fought for in WWII. I am so greatful he isnt here to see this. He would be ashamed.
Hey First Lady Michelle Obama – this is the first time you are proud of your Country???? Funny, this is the darkest times our Country has ever seen. You must not have been paying attention when the Country was running as our founding Fathers created it to be.

I am a 55 year old woman who has worked since the age of 16 while in school. I have been a good citizen, paid taxes, SS and unemployment for years. I lost my job in May 2007 and can not even get an e-mail response from the 10-12 I send out in resumes per week. My husband and I used up our retirement savings and have completed a bankruptcy. It took me 9-10 months to get the “Making Homes Affordable” program, with much frustration dealing with the most non caring of banks, Bank of America, who we bailed out! I didn’t even qualify for 99 weeks of unemployment,
I have 4 weeks left and I am done. So much for a program to lower the mortgage and have no money anyway to PAY FOR IT! What a complete waste of time and effort….now my home, the remainder of my nest egg, is underwater and up for a short sale. As a christian, I find it deplorable that you want to send $400 million of aide to the Palestinians, our enemy and terrorist, treat Isreal like crap, and refuse to assist your own immediately. Why are we sending money to other countries when our people are losing everything they own and will be homeless soon? Pelosi, may God strike you for your arrogance, pride and pompous pride along with Obama, who has the same heart. You smirk and laugh, mockingly making jokes concerning the normal majority that does not want your policies, but you ignore us and push them through like demons in the darkess and cover of night. May you fall into the pit you have dug for others, and remember, hell is not a nice place to spend eternity. We want our country back to what the forefathers intended, less government, less intrusion, less taxes, etc. May God have mercy on the souls in DC who are like their fateher, Satan.

We the American Middle Class Workers are too big to fail also! I have been taking names! I watch the news each day after I send resumes to every job I see online. I know very well who I need to vote for in november, and for those of you who are unsure…. just remember the republican party votes no each time an extension is voted on! They need to go, if we are to survive! I am scared to death, just like many others. I pray every day for the strength to go on. But when it comes time to vote, I will vote out in my state every republican I can. We are not lazy, we are not drug addicts, and its against our rights to require we be drug tested! We are tired of the republican party trying to turn our country upside down, with the racial tactics and the non-compassion they have for the victims of their last administration. We will speak in november! I live with a friend now and have had no income but food stamps since april 5th. I can no longer claim weeks, so I am sure I am not counted! This country is in turmoil, because of the republican party that reduced us all to poverty! We know, and we will be heard in november!

I worked at a job for 14 years and got laid off in May 2008. Although I received unemployment benefits weeks after my last day of work, I was and still am emphatically looking for employment, even if it’s part time. I returned to college full-time in July 2009 and I’m still looking for work. Most of the interviewers told me that I’m overqualified, although I don’t have degrees yet, because my resume apparently holds more star power than the job I interviewed for. The fact of the matter is that I need income coming in. When Governor Paterson sent me the letter in April of this year telling me I’ve exhausted all of my benefits, that put my household in a financial bind and leaves us behind on bills. I feel helpless because I’m not being allowed to do my job as a man of the house and provide for the house. Plus, I can’t even get my books for my classes because I have no unemployment benefits and no job. Needless to say, provision for Tier 5 is necessary, not just for me, but for others like me or worse. It’s easy for people like Speaker Pelosi as well as various Republicans who are not in my situation or worse to “simply” deny us, but God forbid if they or their loved ones are in these situations. Shame on any politician who dares to deny us coverage!!!!!

We the unemployed can’t even go on vacation. The people in office will be going to many exotic places and will be eating the best of foods. We the people that unemployed will be hopefully eating out of cans of food. This crisis has to all stop here. We are all Americans, we the unfortunate unemployed are unfortunate enough because we were laid off from our jobs and no employer is hiring in this recession.
This is not our fault. I was sick for weeks after I lost my job. The people in office see everything in rose colored glasses because their living high on a hog while we are suffering. This is no fun for the unemployed people of America, though we will have fun come voting time in November.
We shall stand all together and knock out of office those who are against us. We the people who are unemployed love this country, we fought for this country, we cried for this country and now some of the people in office just want to turn their backs on us. We the unemployed can’t even go on vacation. The people in office will be going to many exotic places and will be eating the best of foods. We the people that unemployed will be hopefully eating out of cans of food. This crisis has to all stop here. We need jobs or we need TIER 5 CONTINUOUSLY….We will take no more disrespect from some of these republicans in office.
We shall stand all together and knock out those who are against us. We the people who are unemployed love this country, we fought for this country, we cried for this country and now some of the people in office just want to turn their backs on us. TIER 5 UNTIL THE ECONOMY IS BACK TO NORMAL. WE DON’T DESERVE BREADLINES. WE DON’T WANT TO GO ON WELFARE! WE WANT TO WORK! THIS IS THE 21 CENTURY, 2010!
SOMEONE HAS TO BE SMART ENOUGH TO FIGURE SOMETHING OUT.
WE THE MILLIONS OF UNEMPLOYED HAVE PAID TAXES AND DEDUCTIONS IN THE TRILLIONS FOR YEARS TO KEEP THIS COUNTRY ALIVE!
NOW IT’S TIME TO KEEP THE UNEMPLOYED ALIVE UNTIL THIS RECESSION IS OVER.

I’m a Republican, a proud American and a unemployed architectural designer who has ran out of benefits. I’m the kind of guy who was layed off before and never even applied for unemployment insurance. In fact I never received unemployment insurance until the economy went completely downward. I want to work so badly that I VOLUNTEER. Yes, I’ve been laid off before, but always picked myself up and got another job within a week. This is bad, really bad and why you are against your own people is beyond me. This is America where people give each other a helping hand. I’ve worked for over 30 years and more in this country, probably when some of you in office were babies. I helped make this country survive for so many years. We are the people who want to work. Why can’t you understand that? We have no jobs here in New Jersey. In fact we don’t have many jobs anywhere in the U.S. WE ARE IN TROUBLE UNLESS WE CREATE JOBS. Perhaps you don’t want to give us TIER 5, WELL THAN DO SOMETHING ABOUT CREATING JOBS SO WE COULD HAVE WHAT YOU HAVE. WE ARE LOSING OUR HOMES, WE ARE LOSING OUR FAMILIES. I JUST LOST A FRIEND TO SUICIDE BECAUSE OF THIS CRISIS. WE NEED JOBS. IF WE DON’T HAVE JOBS WE NEED TO SURVIVE. I READ THE PAPERS EVERYDAY. CRIME RATES ARE UP, PEOPLE ARE LOSING THEIR HOMES…ETC… Please and consider to help us. Thank you for your time.

To Linda above: First let me say that I am very sympathetic to your plight and that of all who are currently unemployed. I myself was laid off five months ago and had to start receiving social security benefits earlier than I had planned, and am without health insurance of any kind. However, my living situation is stable and I hope that my good health continues until Medicare kicks in two years from now.

I would like to ask you about your extremely hostile tone toward President Obama and Michelle Obama. Our society is broken, but I am still proud of our most recent choice as president. Maybe you should try to understand the situation that he is dealing with – a president doesn’t have that much power and his opponents are ruthless – they do not have the interests of the American people in mind, but I think he does. And by the way, how is it that you cannot even spell his first name correctly? Think about it.

I am not so sure why the republican party thinks its a shoe in. In November!!! Everyone states…the polls show they may win.
Well I sat in a room yesterday with seven educated people/friends including myself in the good state of Ohio, and not one of us has been asked who we would vote for! However everyone states they would never vote for the Republican party again in their lifetime. Where do they get their polls from? Maybe the Democratic party does have it right!! The unemployed educated American workers have watched too long, and have come to their senses like myself and we will vote Democratic in November come hell or high water! We have watched you (Republicans) reduce our friends and families to poverty, and not give a rats a** if we live, eat, or die in the streets! Thats the truth!! We all see it and know it!!! According to my friends and myself we think your all out to give to the rich and you could care less about the poor or the unemployed, no matter who you hurt in the process! Read some blogs about the tier 5 extension….You will see many people that were Republicans admitt that they will never vote republican again as long as they live! I say good for them. Thank God they are seeing the light! Unfortunetely as they lose their homes and their children go hungry! Yes that is you….The republican party! No thank you!!! Take your racist bullcrap to some other country….We are sick of it!!!! GOD BLESS THE HOMELESS AND THE HUNGRY CHILDREN THAT THE REPUBLICAN PARTY DOES NOT CARE ABOUT! GOOD, WILL OVERCOME THE BAD!! JUST WAIT AND SEE AND LEARN WHAT THE AMERICAN MIDDLE CLASS UNEMPLOYED ARE CAPABLE OF DOING IN NOVEMBER YOU REPUBLICAN CROOKS!!!! Your all swines that need to suffer just like you have made the American people suffer! We intend on getting rid of you by firing you! Remember our tax dollars pay your salaries and its too late to turn back now!!!! The damage your party has done is unimaginable, and you all deserve to be placed on unemployment like the rest of us with no extensions. We will do our best to make sure it happens in November! I want you all drug tested, I want to see all your legal papers and birth certificates!!! I also want to do a criminal background check on each and every Republican in office or getting ready to run for office!!!! We mean business boys, and our business is the Republican party, falling down!!!! Just like you have let us fall down!!!! See Ya in November…..HA HA Please let that idiot Sarah Palin run for office……It would make us so happy!!! HA HA.

Im 31 and have been laid off since 2009, i know i havent reached the 99 week mark, but the people at unemployment are so lazy and worthless, that i might not see a check for weeks on end. I, like everyone else, has been job hunting. everywhere is taking applications, no where is hiring. I’m trying to go back to college, since right now the situation feels hopeless, but, i loose all benefits when i go to school (here’s an idea, dont take away the EARNED unemployment from full time students, allow us all to better ourselves, with the financial backing of unemployment AND student loans) frankly, I dont feel any of us as asking for a hand out, since congress hasnt done shit to protect the american worker, make laws requiring companies that outsource pay their foreign labor the same as us, then we’d all have jobs! its their fault this situation has come to pass, and frankly, its paper, PRINT MORE. jesus christ its not even backed by anything other than make believe ideals!!!!
