Mike: Hello to all this Friday. While there are no specific job loss reports due today, the job markets will be influenced by the GDP (Update: contracted at a staggering 6.2 percent pace) and NAPM-Chicago (Update:improved 34.2 in Feb vs 33.3 in Jan) reports. The mood of the “consumer” will be shown in the Consumer Sentiment (Update: U.S. consumer confidence fell to a three-month low) number at 10am.
Mike: One of our readers, Troy, posted the following in the February 13 edition of The Layoff List:
Millions of Americans who lost their jobs prior to September 1, 2008 could not afford Cobra. Millions more elected Cobra but have now depleted their resources and can not continue on. Still millions more with pre-existing conditions who rely on cobra to bridge the 18 month gap between their former employers insurance and their state’s high risk insurance pools are struggling to pay their premiums every month to prevent being locked out of insurance permanently.

Please join us in asking Congress and the Obama administration to eliminate the arbitrary September 1, 2008 cut-off date and 9 month limitation of assistance by signing our petition at ipetitions http://www.ipetitions.com/petition/cobrareform/ (search under cobra reform or click on my name above) and telling your friends about our efforts.

Mike: I urge the readers of The Layoff List to help out Troy and sign the petition at http://www.ipetitions.com/petition/cobrareform/ to improve the COBRA legislation.

My media complaint of the day:
Yesterday we had the weekly jobless claims number, which was a disturbing 667,000 – the highest number since 1982. Some news organizations reported that the numbers weren’t as bad as those in the 1970s and 1980s because of population increases, but they don’t give the same attention to the monthly unemployment numbers – currently at 7.6% – which were changed during the Clinton administration. The actual employment rate, when factoring in the “discouraged workers” who removed from the unemployment numbers in 1998 stand at 13.9%. Yet the MSM still sticks to the government line and doesn’t report that discrepancy. So while the 667,000 jobless claims reported on Thursday are less, percentage wise, than in the 70’s and 80’s, the actual unemployment rate is higher now than the 10.8 % unemployment rate reported at the peak of the 1982 recession. Note the U6 level below and you will get a better picture the actual unemployment rate.

Chart of U.S. Unemployment

Mike: And as long as I’m thinking of it, why hasn’t the media pointed out that from January 15 to February 26 the weekly jobless claims number increased from 524,000 to 667,000. Not being a math wiz, but that’s 143,000 more unemployed in the span of five weeks! That’s nearly a 22% jobless claims increase in that five-week span, yet the attention paid to that unsettling detail is marginal at best.
Mike: If you are interested in seeing the monthly unemployment rates from 1948 till now, take a look at the Civilian Unemployment Rate.
